The best survival preparedness starts with a plan. You can never determine when and where disasters are most likely to occur, but putting a plan in place is an excellent start. Have a family meeting and talk about ways to prepare your home. Decide on a safe central location to meet if family members are separated. Discuss evacuation strategies together and run drills from time to time. The kids will have fun as they practice getting more and more familiar with a life saving plan that you all developed together and this will also strengthen the family bond.

Home emergency preparedness kits in several designated areas clearly marked and ready to go is a time saver and will bring you peace of mind. You may need to evacuate at a moments notice. You can make these yourself with just a small number of basic items (supplies, food and water) needed to sustain your household for 72 hours in the event of an emergency. Pack your favorite crossword puzzle, coloring book for the kids, make up for the wife or anything that might lower anxiety during a disaster. Note: Your kit should have enough items to help you manage without services such as gas, water, power and sewage.
